United Kingdom-based former Zimbabwe national football team player and Dynamos captain Memory Mucherahowa says Zanu PF has destroyed soccer in the country and everything else – people’s lives, families and the nation.

As a result, the ruling party must be removed from power for the country to go forward.

In a live Facebook interview with prominent broadcaster Ezra Tshisa Sibanda, the straight-talking Mucherahowa – while emphasising he wasn’t a political activist but someone whose life has been ruined by politics, said Zanu PF has now captured local football teams, particularly Dynamos and also Highlanders through Sakunda sponsorship.

Explaining his desire to become Dynamos chairman in future, Mucherahowa said he can’t join the team currently because “it’s now Zanu PF”.

He said Sakunda is fronted by business mogul Kuda Tagwirei but is allegedly owned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, hence football is now run by Zanu PF.

He also further said there were also other football clubs like FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum in Zimbabwe also influenced by the ruling party.

He said Caps United owned by Zanu PF Murehwa West MP Farai Jere is also a ruling party project.

Mucherahowa, who won many titles with Dynamos and the Soccer Star of the Year in 1994, added that Zimbabwe is now unlivable as a country as Zanu PF has reduced it to ashes.

“Zanu PF has destroyed football, families, lives – everything,” Mucherahowa said.

He said due to this, he is not coming back to Zimbabwe anytime soon unless Zanu PF is gone.Mucherahowa said if he were to return home after criticising Zanu PF like this, he will be killed.

“They are killers, they have killed many people,” he said.

The legendary midfielder, who had a stint in Belgium and went to Argentina to try to join South African football legend Doctor Khumalo at Ferro Carril Oeste in 1995, said things must now change as “nothing really works in Zimbabwe”.

Dear President Mnangagwa and Mr. Peter Murphy

Nick Mangwana

It is mind-boggling that the Government of Zimbabwe’s spokesperson, Secretary for Information and Publicity, Mr. Nick Mangwana, has chosen to mislead the world into believing that Mr. Peter Murphy is a former Prime Minister of Australia (see a link to a social media message by Mr. Mangwana is pasted below my signature). For the record, Mr Murphy has never been a Prime Minister, let alone a legislator in Australia. He is one of those Australians who are gullible enough to accept Zanu PF propaganda as fact, a position many believe is influenced by Mrs. Sekai Holland with whom Mr. Murphy is closely associated and the two have worked together for many years. Mrs Holland, who had been in opposition politics since the formation of the Movement for Democratic Change, is suspected by many to have been bribed by the Government of Mr. Mnangagwa, and turned against the opposition since the November 2017 coup in Zimbabwe. The government of Zimbabwe is known for dishing out money to high-profile personalities to buy favors. Shortly before the 2023 elections, High Court Judges were given US$400,000.00 disguised as loans. Permanent Secretaries were given similar amounts. Each of 22 Government Ministers was given US$500,000.00 as “loans” while Deputy Ministers were each given $350,000.00 each. Chiefs in Zimbabwe receive new cars shortly before every election as they are used to coerce their subjects, through the village heads, to vote for Zanu PF.

How does the Australian Government feel when a senior Government of Zimbabwe lies that Mr. Murphy is a former Prime Minister? How does Mr. Murphy himself feel when a Government Official in the Government of Zimbabwe peddles such lies? The whole idea of inviting Mr. Murphy to Zimbabwe was to give credence to the election sham that took place in Zimbabwe, and unfortunately, Mr. Murphy seems to be ignoring the findings by all Election Observer Missions, notably the African Union, SADC, Comesa and the Commonwealth which noted that the elections did not meet the requirements of the Zimbabwe Electoral Act, the Constitution of Zimbabwe, SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections. In its assessment, the Commonwealth Observer Group noted a number of issues that “could impact on the credibility, transparency and inclusivity of the process”.

While the process appeared peaceful in the urban areas, it was a different story in the rural areas away from the election observers where a group called FAZ which is linked to Zanu PF set tables and deployed its officials to entrances to polling stations where villagers who had been intimidated prior to voting day, and told they should record the serial numbers of their ballot papers and present them to FAZ officials on leaving the polling stations, did as they had been instructed. The villagers had been told that because their serial numbers would be recorded, Zanu PF was to check the ballots and see who had voted for whom, and those who would have been seen to have voted would have their hands chopped off. This is really unacceptable.

If Mr. Murphy is still in Zimbabwe, he should contact officials of the opposition parties that contested the elections, and he will be told the stories about the way citizens in the rural areas were intimidated. He may also be shown footage of the FAZ officials on tables decorated by Zanu PF regalia. It is illegal to campaign 24 hours before voting begins, but the FAZ officials on entrances to rural polling stations displayed Zanu PF regalia. Mr. Murphy, would you still call this a free and fair election as you are recorded to be saying on the video? Were you in Zimbabwe during the elections? Did you visit both rural and urban polling stations? If you visited rural polling stations, did you ever hear about FAZ?

I call upon Mr. Murphy to be objective and do two things. Firstly, he should check the facts from as many stakeholders as possible before drawing a conclusion. Secondly, he must ask himself why all of a sudden a senior Government of Zimbabwe official decided to label him as a former Prime Minister of Australia.

I will be engaging Mr. Murhpy on this issue to get him to understand what he is dealing with.

Unions say government targeted teachers who contested on an opposition ticket

Dismissed … government axes 66 teachers for taking part in elections

HARARE – At least 66 schoolteachers have been discharged from Zimbabwe’s public service after breaking their employment code through participating as candidates in last month’s harmonised elections.

But unions say teachers targeted were those who sought political office under the opposition banner while those who took part under Zanu PF were spared the axe.

Public Service Commission (PSC) general manager Grace Machakaire, in correspondence to the secretary for primary and secondary education, said it was replacing 66 teachers who lost their jobs through involvement in party elective politics.

“In line with the Public Service Commission General Letter referenced D/16, dated 17 May 2023, the Commission intends to replace sixty-six (66) teachers who resigned from the Public Service to participate in the 2023 harmonised elections.

“In view of this, you are requested to urgently provide learning areas for the Teachers (copy attached) to enable the Commission to make an informed decision,” Machakaire wrote.

However, reacting to the development, Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) accused government of discrimination after allegedly wielding the axe on teachers who contested the poll on an opposition CCC ticket only.

“In line with section 200 of the constitution, it decided to replace 66 teachers who were successfully nominated as candidates for the 2023 elections.

“Shockingly teachers like Enock Chevedza (of Gokwe South) and Garikai Makwakwa (Makonde, Mashonaland West) who won as councillors for Zanu PF remain in office,” ARTUZ posted on X.

Before the August 23 elections, authorities issued a warning they will not be kind to civil servants who join the political arena.

In a circular to all heads of government ministries before, PSC secretary Tsitsi Choruma said at the time that participation of civil servants in political activities was guided by Section 200 (3) and (4) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No 20) Act of 2013.

“A member of the Public Service who wishes to become a candidate for elections to a local authority or has been nominated as a candidate by a political party, political organisation or political movement or declares himself/herself as a candidate for elections to Parliament or local authority shall submit, in writing a letter notifying the commission of his/her intentions.

“The member shall be deemed to have resigned from the Public Service with effect from the date that the authority is granted for those seeking election to a local authority.

“A member of the Public Service who wishes to seek election to Parliament shall be deemed to have resigned from the Public Service with effect from the date of acceptance of his nomination by the Nomination Court,” she said.
