Harare CBD Bus Terminals Overrun By Vendors, Street Kids, Homeless Adults

Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) bus terminals are increasingly descending into chaos, with vendors, street children, and homeless adults turning them into makeshift settlements, raising serious safety and sanitation concerns for commuters.

Speaking to ZiFM Stereo News, Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Tafadzwa Goliati said the situation has reached alarming levels, describing it as an “invasion” of major termini, which are now overcrowded, poorly managed, and increasingly hazardous.

Goliati added that conditions have worsened sharply, with open defecation becoming common and some people now living and sleeping in and around the terminals. He said:

“Street adults and children are now using bus termini as living spaces. They sleep anywhere, and sanitation conditions are worsening.

“There is a strong smell of urine, and people no longer feel safe, especially at night.”

Many passengers now avoid bus terminals after dark because of crime, poor lighting, and suspected criminals targeting travellers in the crowded areas.

Zimbabwe has received 5 000 tonnes of rice from China as part of efforts to address food insecurity among vulnerable populations.

The consignment, handed over at the Grain Marketing Board in Harare, will augment Government efforts to mitigate effects of recent climatic shocks.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo said priority will be accorded to vulnerable households, including the elderly.

“This gesture is not merely an act of goodwill, it is a profound testament to the enduring and mutually beneficial relations that continue to flourish between the Government of Zimbabwe and the Government of China. Our partnership, grounded in solidarity and shared developmental aspirations, has consistently yielded tangible benefits, particularly in times of adversity.

“As we are all aware, Zimbabwe and the broader Southern African region have, in recent years, been adversely affected by recurrent climatic shocks, most notably the El Niño-induced drought. These challenges have exerted considerable pressure on food systems, livelihoods and the overall well-being of our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable segments of our society,” he said.

Minister Moyo thanked Ambassador Zhou Ding for the generosity, noting that the donation of rice is both timely and impactful.

“Historically, such support has played a pivotal role in cushioning vulnerable communities, sustaining critical institutions and strengthening our national response to drought and related emergencies. This consignment will be distributed in a targeted, transparent and accountable manner,” he said.

Ambassador Zhou said Zimbabwe and China would continue to maintain cordial relations for social and economic development.

“In 2024, when the President declared a state of national disaster due to food shortages caused by the El Niño-induced drought, China responded swiftly by providing emergency food assistance, totalling 10 000 tonnes of rice and wheat to support the most vulnerable communities here in Zimbabwe.

“Today, we are handing over the last batch of 5 000 packs. This food assistance embodies the warm friendship of the Chinese people, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to Zimbabwe’s food security and reflects our enduring solidarity with Zimbabwe, especially in times of difficulties. China remains committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s efforts to strengthen food security and build agricultural resilience,” he said.

Over the years, China has supported Zimbabwe in building agricultural infrastructure, including dams and irrigation systems, to enhance production. It has worked with UN agencies to improve sustainable soil management and water resource planning — efforts that will further strengthen the country’s agricultural resilience and food systems.

China also places a high priority on sharing well-proven, advanced agricultural technologies with Zimbabwe.

In 2021, the Chinese government proposed the Global Development Initiative and the following year the Global Security Initiative emphasising cooperation in food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.

MATABELELAND South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Albert Nguluvhe yesterday toured legacy projects in Beitbridge as part of the province’s preparations to host Independence Day celebrations in Matobo District.

One of the key sites he visited was the Zezani Assembly Point, also known as Juliet Assembly Point, a historic location where ZIPRA and ZANLA forces gathered under the supervision of Commonwealth forces during the 1979 Lancaster House Conference.

The site, which is the only assembly point in the province and one of the 16 such centres countrywide, is also located at the old Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) campsite and is now being developed by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ).

In addition, work on the monument, which will have an independence flame stand, flag-posts, a metal silhouette of a soldier carrying an AK47 as a sign of victory against colonialism, an interpretive house and an interpretive board, is under construction.

Work on the project will be completed in the first week of next month, ahead of the lighting of the Independence flame in the area by Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga on April 10.

After its lighting, the flame will, through the assistance of the NMMZ, be taken through all seven districts of Matabeleland South until it gets to Matobo District for the 46th Independence celebrations.

“This is a very critical point which was established during the ceasefire as we fought for our liberation from colonial rule,” said Minister Nguluve.

NMMZ curator, Mr Stanley Nyamagodo, said: “We are grateful for the support we are getting on the ground and we are confident that we will complete this project within our set time frame of April 5.”
