Source: Pipeline upgrade to boost national fuel security – herald

A MAJOR expansion of the country’s fuel pipeline infrastructure is set to boost national fuel security, increase throughput volumes and support economic growth, with annual pumping capacity expected to rise to five billion litres by the end of next year.

This follows the successful completion of the first phase of a pipeline capacity upgrade project, which increased annual pumping capacity to three billion litres last year.

The project is being spearheaded by the National Oil Infrastructure Company of Zimbabwe (NOIC), whose board chairman, Mr Innocent Chiganze, said the company was well-positioned for sustained growth, improved profitability and increased fuel sales.

In a trading update for the period ended May 31, which was presented at the company’s recent annual general meeting, Mr Chiganze said work was already underway on the second phase of the upgrade programme, which will further strengthen the country’s fuel transportation capacity.

“As we look to the future, our business is poised for growth, innovation and transformation,” he told shareholders.

“Pumping is projected to increase during the year considering the successful completion of the first phase of the pipeline capacity upgrade project to 3 billion litres pumping capacity in 2025.

“Works are already underway to ramp up the pumping capacity to 5 billion litres per year through the second phase of the pipeline capacity upgrade earmarked for completion in December 2027. We expect to exceed the annual targets on fuel injections, profitability and fuel sales.”

The enhanced infrastructure comes amid rising fuel demand and increasing use of the country’s pipeline network. In the first five months of this year, total throughput volumes reached 1,17 billion litres, meeting targets.

According to Mr Chiganze, year-to-date fuel throughput volumes have consistently outperformed corresponding levels recorded in 2024 and 2025, reflecting sustained growth momentum.

The increase in throughput was accompanied by a strong financial performance.

Mr Chiganze said total revenue for the period reached US$110,26 million, surpassing the budgeted US$107,07 million, while profit after tax climbed to US$16,19 million, significantly ahead of the budgeted US$9,64 million.

“The company delivered a strong performance for the period ended 31 May 2026, with total revenue reaching US$110,26 million, exceeding the target of US$107,07 million.”

ZANU PF has shelved succession politics and is focusing on growing the economy to improve livelihoods, the party’s Secretary for Information and Publicity, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, has said.

Speaking at a media conference in Harare yesterday, Ambassador Mutsvangwa said the party’s best way forward was to maintain the current leadership, adding that this would help guarantee stability as 2028 approaches.

“The party realised that the best foot forward was to continue to maintain the leadership of the current President, Cde Mnangagwa,” he said.

“We noticed the temperature within the country, and also within our membership, about 2028, that a lot of forces were beginning to apply themselves to that very important calendar date.

“So, being a party which is used to risk management, we found it best to apply an original solution to that challenge, which was looming on the horizon of 2028.”

Ambassador Mutsvangwa said the position emerged after successive party conferences adopted resolutions prioritising economic development and stability.

“Two conferences ago, the message started coming from within the grassroots of the party to say the President’s tenure should be prolonged to go beyond 2028,” he said.

The party had remained focused on stability, certainty and assured national leadership amid growing interest within and outside the country regarding developments in 2028.

“We are a party with a long history. We are a party which is used to risk management in war and in peace.

“We are a party which is very much aware of opportunistic tendencies, which have always tended to interfere with our party processes at crucial decision-making junctures.

“We had very difficult experiences in the past of dealing with shocks arising from leadership changes or leadership attacks,” he stated.

Ambassador Mutsvangwa denounced the country’s detractors for allegedly seeking to interfere with the party’s internal processes.

He declared that the party chooses its own leadership by elections “and they wanted to interfere with the process of the party”.

“So, the uneasiness of the party membership then translated into a resolution that we push forward the date of the transition to leadership,” he said.

Turning to Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill, Ambassador Mutsvangwa said the proposed law underwent extensive consultations under the guidance of the Speaker of Parliament before being considered and approved by both the National Assembly and the Senate.

He said the Upper House reviewed and addressed clauses that required further consideration.

“Should the President have any reservations regarding the Bill in its current form, he is constitutionally empowered to refer it to Parliament for further deliberation and reconsideration before deciding whether to grant Presidential assent,” he said.

Ambassador Mutsvangwa also highlighted the importance of meetings held by the party last week, saying they were meant to unite party members and strengthen cohesion within the ruling party.

Zanu PF held the Politburo, Central Committee and National Consultative Assembly meetings last week from Wednesday.

ZIMBABWE was plunged into darkness last night after a nationwide power outage.

The outage, which occurred at about 6.24pm, caught many consumers by surprise as the country has enjoyed stable electricity supplies since July last year.

In an interview last night, ZETDC acting managing director Engineer Howard Choga confirmed the blackout and efforts to restore supplies.

“We lost the grid in the last hour and half,” said Eng Choga.

“We are establishing the cause, but at the moment we are concentrating on restoring the grid.”

Bulawayo became one of the first major cities to regain electricity about an hour after the outage, while Harare’s Avenues area was reconnected at about 8.30pm.

Eng Choga later said the process of stabilising the grid had been successful and that power had been restored to parts of Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Kwekwe and Chinhoyi.

THE resilience and determination exhibited by the Rwandese in shaping the trajectory of their country’s renewal in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi has designated Rwanda as a leading example in Africa’s development and technological innovation, Foreign Affairs and International Minister Professor Amon Murwira said.

Speaking at the 32nd anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day, or Kwibohora 32, Prof Murwira said the event stood as a powerful testament to what visionary leadership, national unity and cohesion and collective purpose can achieve even in one of history’s darkest chapters.

“This is a celebration of the resilience, courage and determination of the Rwandan people who transformed one of history’s darkest chapters into a story of reconciliation, unity and national renewal.

“Rwanda’s experience always reminds us that meaningful development flourishes where there is peace, where there is stability, and national cohesion. Through bold reforms, strategic planning and commitment to national development, Rwanda has emerged as one of Africa’s leading examples of transformation and technological innovation.

“The achievements realised under Vision 2050, the national strategy for transformation, and Rwanda’s advances in digital innovation continue to inspire the continent and the world at large,” Prof Murwira said.

Rwanda marks Liberation Day annually on July 4 to mark the end of the genocide against the Tutsi, following the intervention by the Rwanda Patriotic Front forces led by President Paul Kagame.

The genocide against the Tutsi began on April 7, 1994. Over a period of 100 days, more than one million innocent people were systematically murdered by soldiers and militias of the then government.

Prof Murwira commended Rwanda for being Zimbabwe’s dependable and trusted friend sharing common values and aspirations for Africa’s development, anchored on the pursuit of economic diplomacy to promote peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial partnerships.

He thanked Rwanda, all ambassadors in Zimbabwe and global states for the invaluable support and trust rendered during Zimbabwe’s successful election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.

“We do not take this trust for granted. We believe we will use the trust to make a better world for all. We look forward to working closely with Rwanda and many other countries in advancing the African and the world agenda of promoting peace and security, supporting reform to the global governance architecture being led by our UN Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr Antonio Guterres,” Prof Murwira added.

Rwanda’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe James Musoni said Liberation Day was a celebration of resilience more than a military victory.

“Kwibohora is much more than the celebration of a military victory. It is a celebration of resilience, unity, courage, patriotism and the determination of Rwandans to rebuild their country through reconciliation, good governance, accountability, and inclusive development,” said Ambassador Musoni.

He said Zimbabwe and Rwanda shared a steadfast commitment to deepening bilateral ties anchored by the visionary leadership of the two countries’ presidents, with cooperation expanding in areas including healthcare, sustainable energy, education, and trade facilitation in the framework of the joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation.
