A MAZARURA Bus Company secretary has appeared in court facing fraud charges after he allegedly removed a director from the family transport business and facilitated the appointment of new directors who went on to take control of the company.

Tsamwisai Richard Chitombo was charged with fraud when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Jesse Kufa, who granted him US$300 bail.

It is the State’s case that Mazarura Bus Service and Stores was incorporated in 1986 under the Companies Act with the late Killian Mazarura as the majority shareholder holding 10 000 shares, while Shingirai and Chris John Mazarura each held one share.

Chitombo became the company secretary in 2003. The court heard that the company operated bus services along the Harare-Nyamapanda route and amassed substantial assets over the years, including more than 100 buses, commercial properties in Mutoko, Murehwa, Suwe, Kotwa, Nyamapanda, Makaha and Harare, as well as several heavy-duty trucks and luxury vehicles.

Prosecutors allege that after the death of Mr Killian Mazarura in February 2018, the complainant (Chris) travelled to South Africa to wind up another business.

Upon returning to Zimbabwe in November 2025, the complainant allegedly discovered that he had been removed as a director of the company without his knowledge or consent and that shares due to him had not been issued.

The State further alleges that the accused unlawfully appointed Trevor Mazarura and Charles Mazarura as directors in 2018 without following the required corporate procedures and fraudulently allocated shares to them.

“The complainant further noticed that the accused person had fraudulently appointed Trevor Mazarura and Charles Mazarura as Directors of the Mazarura Bus Service and Stores Pvt Ltd in 2018 without following proper procedures and fraudulently issued them with some shares. Trevor and Charles assumed control of the company without the complainant’s knowledge and started collecting rentals from properties registered under Mazarura Bus Services and Stores (Pvt) Limited from the year 2018 up to date.

“As a result of accused person’s action, complainant suffered an actual prejudice of US$300 000 and nothing was recovered,” the State alleged.

Department of Home Affairs officials at the camp did not provide an exact headcount on Tuesday afternoon but said the crowd was in its “thousands” and that more buses were still arriving from Durban, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

Some travellers said they had been on the road for three to four days.

The Musina Showgrounds camp was at capacity by mid afternoon. People were sleeping on mats and cardboard under trees. There were long queues outside the Musina home affairs and immigration offices where travellers were applying for travel certificates.

A man from Durban, who said he came to South Africa to pursue his career, noted the difference in conditions between the Durban and Musina camps.

“We were provided with food and everything at the Durban camp. Here in Musina there is no food and no showers,” he said.

Several other people in the queue told a similar story. They said they had not eaten since the previous day and had been sleeping outside since arriving in Musina.

One Malawian said he was frustrated by delays in processing exit papers.

The man said he had lived in South Africa for five years.

“I am frustrated because the process here at Musina and Beitbridge is very slow,” he said.

A fellow Malawian said he had lived in South Africa for four years and had all the necessary documents to be in the country. He was leaving because of the current political climate.

“Things in South Africa are bad because we are fighting for jobs with locals,” he said. “The MK Party just wants everyone out. It’s chasing everyone out. I am happy that I am going back home.”

There were South African Police Service and South African National Defence Force vehicles at the camp entrances and along the road leading to the home affairs office.

Officials said processing would continue while buses continued to arrive. Travellers said they were waiting for confirmation on transport to Beitbridge once they had their papers.

One person died, and 11 were injured when a bus carrying people from KwaZulu-Natal to a repatriation camp in Limpopo crashed on the N1.

Limpopo transport department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said the crash occurred after the driver allegedly lost control due to fatigue, causing the bus to overturn.

The accident happened about 4km south of the Beitbridge Border Post, near Musina.

“The driver has been confirmed deceased, while 11 passengers sustained injuries. The injured were transported to Musina Hospital for medical treatment,” Mabata added.

She said the road was open to traffic, but that temporary closures could be implemented.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) said the bus had been travelling from Durban to Musina.

It was carrying 65 passengers who were en route to be processed by authorities before being facilitated through the Beitbridge Port of Entry as part of the repatriation process.

BMA acting commissioner Major General David Chilembe conveyed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased driver.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. On behalf of the Border Management Authority, I extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased driver during this difficult time.

“We also wish the injured passengers a full and speedy recovery and thank all emergency responders and law enforcement officials who acted swiftly to provide assistance at the scene,” he said.
