A 43-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to an effective five years in prison after he axed his sister and her boyfriend following a heated domestic dispute.
Sikhumbuzo Moyo of Njube suburb was convicted on two counts of attempted murder by Western Commonage regional magistrate Mrs Sibongile Marondedze.
He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for each count, with the sentences to run concurrently, effectively serving five years behind bars.
The prosecutor Mr Milton Moyo told the court that the attack occurred on the night of 22 June at around 10PM at Sikhumbuzo’s residence in Njube.
Sikhumbuzo had been drinking beer at home with his sister, Similo Moyo (44), who was in her bedroom chatting with a friend only identified as Mama Zandile. Shortly after, Similo’s boyfriend, Maleya Phiri, visited her at the house, prompting Mama Zandile to leave.
“Similo accompanied her friend outside and Sikhumbuzo followed them. A misunderstanding broke out between the siblings as they returned to the house,” said Mr Moyo.
In a fit of rage, Sikhumbuzo started assaulting his sister, beating her repeatedly all over her body.
When Phiri intervened to restrain him, the situation escalated further. Sikhumbuzo rushed to his bedroom and returned armed with an axe.
“He struck Similo on the left eye with the axe handle and again on the same spot with the blade. She immediately lost consciousness,” the court heard.
When Phiri attempted to defend his girlfriend, he was also struck on the head with the axe, rendering him unconscious.
Phiri later regained consciousness and found Similo bleeding and dazed, sitting on her bed. They realised that Sikhumbuzo had locked them inside the house and fled with both the axe and the keys.
A neighbour came to their rescue, alerting emergency services. Police and an ambulance responded to the scene and both victims were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital where they were admitted.
A police report was made leading to Sikhumbuzo’s arrest.
