A HARARE car dealer has appeared in court on allegations of duping a client of over US$8,000 in a botched vehicle import deal.

Energy Kufandirori appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo facing a charge of theft of trust property.

The State alleges that on October 22 last year, along Mbuya Nehanda Street in Harare, Kufandirori was given US$8,112 by a client to facilitate the importation of a Nissan Caravan NV350 from Japan. It is alleged that after receiving the money, he drafted and signed an affidavit acknowledging receipt of the cash.

He undertook to deliver the vehicle, which was expected to reach Tanzania in the first week of January this year. However, the court heard that when the client later sought an update on the vehicle in January, Kufandirori allegedly became evasive.

He is said to have later sent WhatsApp messages citing delays and promising to follow up on the vehicle’s status, but nothing materialised.

The total value prejudiced is US$8,112 and nothing has been recovered.

Meanwhile, a Harare duo also appeared before the same court facing fraud charges after they allegedly attempted to sell a residential stand using stolen title deeds.

Absolom Harunashe Mazeza and Ali Ali appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo, who granted them US$100 bail each.

The State alleges last week, the complainant was alerted by a third party that the two were in possession of copies of title deeds for a property in Ruwa and were in the process of selling it.

The property in question is Stand number 509, Ruwa Township, in Goromonzi District.

Acting on the tip-off, the complainant made a report to ZRP Ruwa on Monday, leading to the arrest of the two accused persons.

Prosecutors allege that the pair had no authority to sell the property.

Lawrence Gangarahwe appeared for the State.
