THE hearings for three of the six executive members of the Zimbabwe Urban and Rural Council Nurses Workers’ Union (ZURCNWU) slated for December 13 failed to kick off after their lawyer questioned the motive behind splitting the group.
The six union leaders are under investigation for inciting colleagues to abscond duty had their hearings set on two different dates, December 13 and 16 and on three different venues for each.
Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, ZURCNWU president Simbarashe Tafirenyika said their lawyer proposed that the hearings be postponed to January 7, 2020 at one venue.
“Our lawyer then questioned the reason behind splitting her clients for the hearings, yet she is the one who represents them all, therefore, she requested for the postponement to a later date at the same venue for all her clients,” Tafirenyika said.
The employer is alleged to have also failed to convene the hearings after fielding fewer representatives than is required to start the process.
“The employee side then dropped another bombshell by confessing that their side did not constitute a quorum, therefore, the meeting was now informal … the meeting then ended after about 20 minutes of deliberations,” Tafirenyika said. The nurses downed tools on November 4, halting all services at council clinics.
