Athorities have confiscated illicit substances valued at approximately ZiG80 million as the Government steps up efforts to dismantle supply networks and protect communities from the growing scourge.
This was revealed in a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare today.
“Drugs and illicit substances valued at approximately ZiG 79 931 130.00 were confiscated,” reads the statement.
“These included crystal meth, cocaine, ecstasy tablets, dagga, khat and unregistered medicines, including cough syrups.”
It was also revealed that law enforcement agencies have recorded notable success in disrupting drug syndicates and illegal distribution networks across the country, with 31 bases dismantled.
“A total of 2 889 accused persons were arraigned before the courts while 381 convictions were secured,” reads the statement.
“Approximately 453 drug suppliers, 2 436 individual end-users, and 31 drug bases were dismantled in selected districts of Manicaland and Mashonaland West Provinces.”
Government also revealed that social protection interventions are being strengthened as part of efforts to rescue vulnerable children and rehabilitate affected communities.
“The removal of 32 children living and working on the streets has been undertaken,” reads the statement.
Cabinet further noted that awareness and prevention campaigns have reached 285 918 beneficiaries, while authorities acquired drug-testing kits and facilitated the reintegration of 171 children with their families.
A US$1 million Youth Empowerment Fund has also been launched as part of broader efforts to provide economic opportunities and reduce vulnerability to drug abuse.
