TWO men from Beitbridge have been charged for attempting to kill Ward 3 councillor Mr Takavingei Mahachi by stabbing him with knives at his house in Tshidixwa suburb on Independence Day.

Ashley Ndou (23) and Prospect Ziyengwa (27) are accused of stabbing the councillor intending to kill him, with the help of a third man still at large, then fleeing after inflicting deep cuts on his left arm and chest.

The two were not asked to plead when they appeared before Beitbridge resident magistrate Mr Takudzwa Gwazemba at the local regional court on a charge of attempted murder.

They were remanded in custody to May 6. Prosecuting, Mrs Tsitsi Mutukwa said on Independence Day, at around 9 pm, the three men went to Councillor Mahachi’s house armed with knives. They waylaid him near his car which was parked outside the yard but were spotted by a neighbour.

Councillor Mahachi had gone outside his house to ask the three why they were there and the man still at large then attacked him and stabbed him with a knife on the chest.

Councillor Mahachi fought back but was overpowered by the three who were all stabbing him with their knives at the same time.

The three disappeared into the darkness after realising the councillor was not giving up.

As a result of the attack, Councillor Mahachi sustained wounds on the chest and left arm. He was rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The case was reported to police who arrested Ndou and Ziyengwa a few days later.
