A STATE-OF-THE-ART incinerator is under construction at Mpilo Central Hospital and two refuse trucks have been acquired, a development that will bring an end to the erratic waste collection and disposal system in Bulawayo and surrounding provinces.

The incinerator being constructed with funding from the United Nations Development Programme is the second of its kind in Zimbabwe, the first being housed at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare.

Mpilo chief medical officer Dr Narcacius Dzvanga said two refuse trucks will also coke with the incinerator and given the capacity, Bulawayo and the southern region will no longer have waste-related challenges.

He said the project is underway and although projected to be completed in October, everything was in order as the hospital is now working on recruiting staff to operate the giant structure.

Speaking during a mayoral tour of Bulawayo Hospitals, Dr Dzvanga said refuse collection remained a major concern for the public institution as the hospital sometimes goes for days without waste being collected.
