GOVERNMENT has declared a State of Disaster following the horrific road accident at Suswe along the Harare-Nyamapanda Highway, which claimed 17 lives and injured 33 others, six of them critically.

The accident occurred on Monday at the 175km peg in Mudzi District when a Malawi-bound DNC Luxury Coach carrying 62 passengers, including seven children and three crew members, was involved in a fatal crash.

In a statement last night, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, said President Mnangagwa had invoked Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act to facilitate the mobilisation of resources and assistance for affected families.

“His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde E.D. Mnangagwa, has declared a State of Disaster in terms of Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act following the tragic accident that claimed lives at the 175km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda Highway in Suswe, Mudzi District,” he said.

Minister Garwe said the declaration would enable Government to coordinate all necessary support.

Preliminary investigations indicate that 17 people died while 33 sustained injuries, with six reported to be in critical condition.

The injured are receiving treatment at Mutoko and Kotwa district hospitals.

Minister Garwe said Government’s Civil Protection structures, working together with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, remained on the ground coordinating rescue and retrieval efforts.

“Due to the international route of the bus, the nationalities of the deceased are yet to be fully ascertained,” he said.

Minister Garwe said the tragedy is yet another reminder of the importance of observing road safety regulations at all times.

“This heartbreaking incident once again highlights the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety measures at all times to protect the lives of all citizens and travellers,” he said.

Minister Garwe conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

“The Government of Zimbabwe stands in solidarity with all those affected. We are committed to providing the necessary assistance, including burial support, to ensure that the victims are accorded a dignified send-off,” he said.
