The City of Harare has commended members of its Fire Brigade their dedication to saving lives and property, as the world marked International Firefighters’ Day on Monday.
Acting town clerk Engineer Pakhamile Moyo said the Fire Brigade continues to play a critical role in responding to emergencies across the capital, including fires, road traffic accidents and hazardous incidents.
“The City of Harare proudly honours the courage, commitment and sacrifice of its Fire Brigade — men and women who stand on the frontlines of emergency responses every day,” he said.
Eng Moyo said the Fire Brigade’s role goes beyond firefighting, as it also promotes fire safety awareness and disaster preparedness within communities.
“They are first responders, lifesavers and educators who continuously promote fire safety awareness and disaster preparedness across the city,” he said.
Eng Moyo said despite increasing urban risks and operational challenges, the Fire Brigade has remained steadfast in its mission to protect life, property and the environment.
“Their bravery is demonstrated in their willingness to run towards danger when others flee, embodying the true spirit of service,” he said.
Eng Moyo said the council remains committed to supporting its fire brigade to enhance its emergency response capacity.
“We salute the heroes who run towards danger to save lives,” he said.
International Firefighters’ Day is commemorated annually on May 4 to recognise the work of firefighters and honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
