Goods worth thousands of dollars were reduced to ashes in the early hours of Friday morning when fire swept through the Glen View 8 Furniture Complex.
The blaze, believed to have started at the centre of the complex popularly known as Kumakitchen, broke out at around 2 am.
Residents in Glen View said they were woken by loud bangs as large flames engulfed the site, with thick, billowing smoke covering the area.
The complex accommodates an estimated 4,000 carpenters and informal traders who manufacture and sell furniture, including chairs, sofas, wardrobes, beds and other timber products.
Three fire engines were deployed to the scene. The City of Harare Fire Brigade battled the inferno for hours before managing to contain it and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
To avoid delays, the brigade mobilised water tankers so that engines did not have to return to the station to refill.
City of Harare Corporate Communications Manager Stanley Gama commended the fire teams for their response.
“The fire was eventually contained after hours of heroic work by our Fire Brigade. These men and women have shown time and again that they will deliver when called to duty,” said Gama.
“I’m told the fire was threatening even nearby homes, but our fire teams managed to contain the situation. We are still investigating the cause of the fire.”
