THE Department of Immigration has completed a comprehensive refurbishment of Mpoenghs Border Post in the Mangwe District of Matabeleland South Province, with works that began in November 2025 now transforming the Port of Entry (PoE) into a modern, efficient facility.
Chief Immigration Officer Ms Respect Gono said the refurbishment addressed critical infrastructure and technology gaps.
She said they were now putting final touches on the works ahead of the planned launch of the border on Sunday by the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kezembe Kazembe and Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe.
Ms Gono said they were also rolling out the new Online Border Management System (OBMS) which is a game-changer in facilitating the efficient movement of travellers through the country’s borders.
She highlighted that the OBMS provides a pre-clearance platform where travellers can fill in their details from home using the online Immigration form before arriving at the border.
“The system enhances efficiency, improves data collection, and enables seamless integration with other stakeholders,” said Ms Gono.
“The upgrades are expected to reduce processing times, improve traveller experience, and strengthen border security at Mpoenghs, supporting the broader Government thrust to modernise Zimbabwe’s ports of entry.”
She said as part of the transformation process they had also completed the removal and replacement of the roof, which was near collapse.
Ms Gono added that they had also repainted the building to improve the working environment and erected new signage and billboards for easier navigation.
The Immigration hall now has new partitioned cubicles which streamline traveller processing and the building has been solarised to ensure reliable power supply.
“This reflects the President’s mantra on leaving no one behind making sure even the smallest Borders are well equipped, digitalisation and Solarisation,” added Ms Gono.
