Youths from political parties involved in the national dialogue on Tuesday met to deliberate on the first ever agricultural conference to be held in Harare later this month.As part of the process for the national dialogue coined Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) — the youths are planning to hold the conference where President Mnangagwa will be the guest of honour.
It will run from August 14 to 16.
In preparation for the conference, the youth from all different political parties which are participating in the POLAD had a consultative meeting with officials from the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement to discuss issues to be presented to President Mnangagwa during the inaugural conference.
Speaking after the meeting, youth in agriculture national chairperson, Mr John Muchenje, said the conference was coming at a time when youths are taking farming seriously as an economic enabler.
“President Mnangagwa has been preaching peace, unity and inclusiveness in all government programmes and as a leader of youth farmers in Zimbabwe; I have adopted the same approach of inclusiveness in agriculture,” he said.
“I have called in our fellow young people from different political parties whose leaders believe in the nation building process with President Mnangagwa.
“The issue of development is non-partisan. I believe Zimbabwe is our nation regardless of our political and social affiliations and as young people we need to take a bold step towards developing our own country. Gone are the days when youth were seen loitering in the streets organising unsanctioned demonstrations and destroying our infrastructure. We have passed that phase and we are now in the economic development mood.”
Miss Isabel Simango Mwonzora from MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe said as young people in their party they appreciated what President Mnangagwa was doing towards youth participation in nation building.
“We believe that land must not be distributed on partisan grounds, but on one’s capacity to produce,” she said. “As young people, we should not wait to be called future leaders, we are current leaders and our opportunities must be availed now.”
