A two-month-old baby girl died while eight learners were injured after a scooter reportedly lost brakes and crashed into an unfinished classroom block at a private school in Chikuti, Karoi, police have said.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the fatal accident occurred on Friday around noon.
According to the police, an unregistered DSM scooter towing a trailer loaded with suspected gold ore reportedly reversed uncontrollably after experiencing brake failure before crashing into the classroom block.
Police said the infant died at the scene after being trapped beneath the scooter and falling debris.
“An unregistered DSM scooter towing a trailer loaded with suspected gold ore reportedly reversed uncontrollably after experiencing brake failure before crashing into an unfinished classroom block where a teacher, learners and an infant were present,” reads the statement.
“Subsequently, a two-month-old baby girl died at the scene after being trapped beneath the scooter and falling debris.”
The accident also left eight learners injured.
“Eight learners sustained injuries and were admitted at Karoi District Hospital, while two of the injured learners were later transferred to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for further treatment,” reads the statement.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are underway.
