THE fraud case involving Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS), Corporate 24 Medical Centre and the company’s founder and chief executive officer, Dr Mike Joka, has collapsed after three years of legal proceedings.
PSMAS had accused Corporate 24 and Dr Joka of fraud involving ZWL$108 860 in 2021.The two appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa on June 6, 2023, where they were each granted ZWL$500 000 bail. They were represented by lawyer Levious Mundieta.
According to prosecutors, PSMAS had engaged Forensic RBG Auditors sometime in 2021 to conduct an audit covering the period from 2015 to 2022. The audit allegedly uncovered several cases of fraud.
The State alleged that Corporate 24 rendered non-emergency services to PSMAS members but improperly claimed higher fees using different billing codes intended for services where members should not be charged. Acting on these alleged misrepresentations, PSMAS reportedly made payments into Dr Joka’s bank accounts.
The medical aid society claimed actual prejudice of ZWL$108 860,91, with nothing recovered. However, the case failed to proceed.
On December 18, the matter was removed from further remand after the complainant failed to provide evidence and did not appear in court to substantiate the allegations. The complainant was advised to proceed by way of summons instead.
The case was officially struck off the roll on May 8, bringing the three-year legal battle to an end.
