Police in Dema, Mashonaland East, have launched a manhunt for four men who pounced on a Marondera motorist who had a break down along the Harare-Wedza Road before making off with eight bales of tobacco worth more than US$3 500.

The knife-wielding suspects were reportedly driving in a white pick-up vehicle which they used to ferry the loot.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza yesterday confirmed the incident, while urging farmers to avoid travelling at night.

“Police are looking for four suspects who pounced on a Marondera man after he had a breakdown … Two of the suspects had knives and were using a white pick-up truck. We are appealing to members of the public who might have information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to approach their nearest police station. As police, we are urging tobacco farmers and any motorists to avoid travelling at night so that we avoid such incidences,” he said.

According to the police, on Monday, at around 8pm, Kennedy Nyemba (38) was driving a Toyota Noah loaded with eight bales of tobacco, heading towards Harare. At the 43km peg along the Harare-Wedza Road, the vehicle had a tyre puncture, prompting Nyemba to stop and attend to it.

While in the process of changing the tyre, four suspects in a white pick-up truck arrived with two of them holding knives. They allegedly ordered Nyemba to lie on the ground and tied his hands using a rope. They loaded the tobacco bales into their truck and drove off towards Harare. Nyemba was then rescued by another motorist before filing a report at Dema Police Station.
