Cecil John Rhodes Primary School in Gweru has produced a crocodile artefact from recycled material in a show of innovation, artistry work that dovetails with the Second Republic’s thrust of modernisation and industrialisation.

Twelve learners from the Environmental Management Club produced the crocodile artefact from plastic material and scrap material as it complements Government’s call to give value to waste material through recycling.

This was said by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere in a post Cabinet briefing.

He said Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Torerayi Moyo presented the innovation in Cabinet.

“Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cde Torerayi Moyo presented a crocodile artefact made from recycled material from Cecil John Rhodes primary school in a remarkable display of creativity in relation to environment concept,” he said.

“A group of 12 determined learners recently crafted an extraordinary crocodile artefact using recycled plastic material. This not only showcase their artistic skills, but highlight the importance of sustainability and potential of recycled material.

“They have dedicated this to His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa because the club was his brainchild after he launched the national clean up campaign in 2018 that is when the school came up with the Cecil John Rhodes Environment Club.

“The Grade Five learners understood the significance of promoting sustainable practices in reducing the burden on the environment from the President’s initiative.

“Embracing the idea of recycling they collected and sorted plastic bottle, old cans and scrap metal from their communities and transformed waster into something extraordinary. The learners embarked on a challenging journey of crafting a crocodile artefact entirely from recycled material.”

Dr Muswere said each piece was carefully cut, paying attention to detail as they worked collaboratively using their individual strengths.

He said what they did demonstrated the power of team work, perseverance and value for collective effort.

“It’s a reminder of importance of preserving the rich ecological heritage and embracing sustainable practice and a remarkable gift to our President,” he said.

Commenting on the innovation, Minister Moyo described it as a milestone.

“This is a milestone in terms of innovation. It is important that the skills be inculcated, we want them to come up with patents. It is a collective efforts and I would want to commend all teachers in Zimbabwe,” he said.
