ZIMBABWEANS are fully capable of leading the country’s technological advancement and innovation drive, as demonstrated by the growing number of local players offering home-grown tech solutions, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Dr Omphile Marupi has said.

Speaking to the media during the AV Expo held in Harare yesterday, Dr Marupi said Zimbabwe was making significant strides in embracing new technologies, particularly in the fields of broadcasting, sound engineering and artificial intelligence.

“This is a very critical workshop,” he said. “I am happy because we also have learning institutions here. We have reached that stage where there is no going back in terms of artificial intelligence and even providing quality service in the area of broadcasting or dissemination of information.”

Deputy Minister Marupi noted that the presence of multiple companies showcasing broadcasting and sound equipment was a clear indication that technology is becoming central to the country’s development agenda.

“It is, therefore, very important for us, especially in media to embrace this technology.”

Deputy Minister Marupi added that it was encouraging to see Zimbabweans heeding President Mnangagwa’s call for home-grown, innovative solutions as part of the national development thrust.

“If we are to match the world and to be found competitive . . . I am happy because we are not going to be found going outside the country incurring costs to engage third parties to provide us a service because I can see young men and women from Zimbabwe are doing their own thing, meaning we have the people and we have the brains here in Zimbabwe.

“Because most of the things being shown around here, you can tell it’s actually through the creativity of our young guys and girls who have actually studied what is offered at our learning institutions.”

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe executive director, Mr Napoleon Nyanhi, echoed similar sentiments, describing expos like the AV Expo as crucial platforms for driving technological growth and positioning the country for global competitiveness.

“I am impressed not necessarily because of what I see, but what can be. The potential that I see and the objectives and the vision of where this can go is huge,” he said.

“Expos like these in Europe, in the Americas, in the East and in the West are very, very lucrative.

“Great platforms for tech organisations to come and exhibit what they do.”
