HARARE, Apr.14,2026 (NewsDay Live) -The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has strongly opposed the proposed Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Bill No 3, warning that the legislation would weaken democratic institutions, concentrate executive power, and damage national progress.

In a statement released on Monday, the church body said the Bill poses potential harm to the nation and called on lawmakers to withdraw or significantly revise it.The council pronounced its position after Parliament recently rolled out a four-day nationwide consultation to gather public views on the proposed changes to the national Constitution.

The ZCC warned that weakening systems designed to ensure transparency could “open the door to corruption and the massive, unchecked accumulation of wealth by those in power.””The church cannot support an amendment that compromises public trust, weakens democratic accountability, and diverges from God’s will for just and compassionate leadership,” read the statement.”Withdraw or substantially revise the Bill,” said the ZCC.Several civil society groups and opposition parties have voiced similar concerns, arguing that such major constitutional changes, which have far-reaching implications for the general populace, should be decided directly by voters through a referendum rather than by Parliament. But President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s loyalists in Zanu PF have vowed to press ahead despite growing public disapproval.

The Bill seeks, among other things, to extend presidential terms from the current five years to seven years.
