ZIMBABWE will officially commemorate the International Day of Families tomorrow in Lupane District, Matabeleland North Province, with the national launch set to take place at Lupane Bus Terminus.

The commemorations will be held under the theme, “Families, inequalities and child well-being,” which seeks to promote stronger family systems, reduce socio-economic inequalities and safeguard the well-being of children.

Speaking ahead of the commemorations, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa yesterday said the Government remained committed to protecting and strengthening families as the foundation of resilient communities and sustainable national development.

“The family remains the fundamental unit of society. It is within the family that values, culture, identity and responsibility are nurtured and transmitted from one generation to another,” she said.

“Strong families form the foundation of resilient communities and prosperous nations.”

Sen Mutsvangwa said the Government was concerned by growing inequalities affecting families and children, including poverty, unemployment, drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence and child neglect.

“These challenges undermine family stability and negatively affect the well-being and future of children,” she said.

Sen Mutsvangwa said the decision to host the commemorations in Lupane was part of the Government’s decentralisation drive aimed at ensuring national events benefit communities across the country.
