TRANSPORT mogul and businessman Dr Leonard Mukumba has contributed to the expansion of education infrastructure with the establishment of a modern primary and secondary school in Domboshava, underscoring the growing role of private sector investment in improving access to quality education.
The newly established St Leonard Academy features modern classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art learning facilities, science laboratories and learner-friendly boarding accommodation designed to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The academy was officially commissioned by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Professor Torerai Moyo, who was accompanied by Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo and his Masvingo counterpart, Minister Ezra Chadzamira, and other Government officials.

Dr Mukumba, who owns and operates Inter Africa buses, said he saw it prudent to invest in the education sector and contribute to delivering quality education to learners.
He said what motivated him is President Mnangagwa’s mantra “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo.”
Dr Mukumba said his goal is to ensure that his schools will produce responsible citizens who will contribute in the development of Zimbabwe.
In his address, he also challenged learners to work hard and strive for excellence.
“This school has been built for you. Make the best out of this school. Work hard and strive for excellence,” he said.
“To parents, thank you for the support, we promise to be responsible stewards of your children’s future.”
He added that his goal is to build even better schools in all the Provinces of Zimbabwe.

The Department of Immigration is continuing to process large volumes of returnees at the country’s southern port of entry as more Zimbabweans leave South Africa amid anti-migrant protests.
Regional Immigration Officer in charge of the Southern Region, Mr Joshua Chibundu, said his team was managing the influx without disruption to normal traffic. The Southern Region covers Beitbridge, Sango, Chiredzi and Masvingo.
He said as of Tuesday, officers had handled 976 people who returned on self-repatriation while another 1 132 people arrived through Government assistance.
“Our team is equal to the task. We are seeing people arriving independently and others coming through state-assisted evacuations. In both cases, we are processing them in an orderly manner,” said Mr Chibundu.
He said all returnees are being profiled at the border to help the Government to record numbers, identify vulnerable cases and plan onward movement to home districts.
Mr Chibundu said those arriving under the State-assisted programme are being moved in a coordinated way.
This includes Malawian nationals who are transiting through Zimbabwe on their way home.
“The Embassy, the South African Government, Zimbabwe and Malawi are working together. Malawians in transit are profiled at Beitbridge and then assisted to continue their journey in an organised manner. This coordination prevents congestion and protects people along the route,” he said.
Mr Chibundu said to keep services running smoothly, the Department has deployed manpower evenly across shifts and counters at Beitbridge Border Post.
“We have ensured that manpower is deployed evenly so that normal traffic flow is not disturbed. Tourists, truck drivers and other travellers are still being cleared without unnecessary delays, while we give priority attention to the returnees,” he added.
Mr Chibundu said the department will maintain the current tempo for as long as the repartriation continues.

DOZENS of elderly people in Harare on Wednesday received free eye screening services under a private sector initiative aimed at reducing preventable blindness and improving access to quality eye care.
The programme, held during the official opening of Pentagon Eyecare, complements Government efforts to expand access to affordable eye health services in line with the National Eye Health Strategy and Vision 2030’s universal health coverage targets.
Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, saying it would improve their quality of life by enabling early detection and treatment of eye conditions common among older people.
Mr Nedson Shoko said the programme demonstrated that senior citizens had not been forgotten.
“No one cares about our sight despite our age, yet we still want to see our grandchildren and remain active in our communities. We are grateful to the Government and the private sector for recognising our needs,” he said.
Another beneficiary, Ms Lynne Shoko, said the screenings would help restore dignity and independence among elderly people.
“This is a timely intervention that will allow many senior citizens to continue participating meaningfully in family and community life,” she said.
Speaking at the launch, Pentagon Eyecare managing director Mr Wadzanai Mujuru said the initiative was driven by the need to make quality eye care accessible to all Zimbabweans.
“Clear vision should not be a privilege when it is a necessity. Eye care is fundamental to learning, productivity, opportunity and human dignity,” he said.
Mr Mujuru said the company was committed to providing high-quality services at affordable prices without compromising standards.
“We have not lowered our standards to become affordable. Instead, we have challenged ourselves to make excellence affordable,” he said.
“Every patient who walks through our doors should leave feeling respected, valued and genuinely cared for.”
He said the initiative represented more than the opening of an optometry practice, describing it as a long-term commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities through accessible eye health services.
“The greatest vision is not only what we see with our eyes, but what we see with our hearts. What begins today as a vision will grow into a movement that transforms lives,” said Mr Mujuru.

Investigations have confirmed that the omnibus involved in the crash, registration number AGL 0921, did not possess a valid Certificate of Fitness, as required in terms of Section 7(1)(b)(iv) of the Road Motor Transportation Act [Chapter 13:15),” he said.

GOVERNMENT has, with immediate effect, suspended the operating licence of all commuter omnibuses owned by transporter Blessing Matimbe alias BLESMA following a fatal road traffic crash that claimed the lives of three people on June 1, 2026, at the intersection of Willowvale and Nyandoro roads in Harare.
At least 10 other passengers were injured during the road traffic accident. The commuter omnibuses ply the City-Glen View/Budiriro route.
In a statement, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona confirmed the developments and said this suspension shall remain in force until corrective compliance measures have been instituted in terms of the laws and regulations of the country.
“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has established that the operator, Blessing Matimbe, was in breach of the country’s road traffic and safety regulations. Investigations have confirmed that the omnibus involved in the crash, registration number AGL 0921, did not possess a valid Certificate of Fitness, as required in terms of Section 7(1)(b)(iv) of the Road Motor Transportation Act [Chapter 13:15),” he said.
“Furthermore, the vehicle did not hold a valid Route Permit, in contravention of Section 12 of the same Act.
“Our assessment also indicates that the driver of the omnibus was not compliant with the regulatory requirements prescribed under the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11] and Statutory Instrument 168 of 2006.”
Minister Mhona said these violations constitute a serious breach of the terms and conditions attached to the operator’s licence issued to Blessing Matimbe for the provision of public transport services in Zimbabwe.
“Informed by these findings, and acting in terms of Section 17(b)(i) of the Road Motor Transportation Act Chapter 13:15), the Commissioner of Road Motor Transportation has exercised his statutory mandate to suspend, with immediate effect, the operation of all omnibuses belonging to Blessing Matimbe on all routes authorised by the Ministry,” he said.
“This suspension shall remain in force until corrective compliance measures have been instituted in terms of the laws and regulations of the country.
“I wish to remind all transport operators, associations, motorists, and members of the public that the safety and security of the commuting public should not be compromised.
“Operators who disregard licence conditions, statutory obligations, and safety requirements will face suspension or cancellation of their licences.”
Minister Mhona called upon all road traffic law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and ensure full compliance with the country’s road traffic laws for the protection of all road users.

Government, through a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development warned that carrying explosives, fuel, hazardous chemicals and other dangerous goods in public service vehicles is prohibited under the law because of the serious risk such materials pose to passengers and other road users.

GOVERNMENT has warned public service vehicle operators against transporting fuel, explosives, hazardous chemicals and other prohibited substances, saying offenders risk prosecution under the law.
The warning follows last month’s tragic kombi fire in Gweru that claimed the lives of seven primary school pupils after a vehicle they were travelling in caught fire and exploded.
Authorities said preliminary investigations established that the driver and conductor had placed a 10-litre jerry can containing petrol near the vehicle’s battery after boarding passengers, including schoolchildren.
The kombi, which was carrying 23 pupils from Matongo and Stanley primary schools, caught fire near Senga Shopping Centre.
Seven pupils who were seated at the rear of the vehicle were burnt beyond recognition and died at the scene, while other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Government, through a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development warned that carrying explosives, fuel, hazardous chemicals and other dangerous goods in public service vehicles is prohibited under the law because of the serious risk such materials pose to passengers and other road users.
Authorities urged public transport operators to strictly observe safety regulations and prioritise passenger welfare, warning that those found violating the law will face prosecution.
The Government also appealed to passengers to remain vigilant and report operators who transport hazardous substances in public service vehicles to help prevent similar tragedies.
In April, 12 bodies were recovered following a fatal explosion involving a Toyota Quantum at the 27km peg along Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road near Esigodini.
The incident occurred on April 16 at around 12.45 pm when the vehicle exploded.
TSCZ managing director Mr Munodawafa then appealed to the motoring public to avoid carrying items that have the potential to explode.
