BEITBRIDGE is set to host national commemorations of World Literacy Day tomorrow, with Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo expected to lead the proceedings at Oakleigh House Trust School.
It is understood that the World Literacy Day commemorations are expected to reinforce the literacy agenda under NDS2 and Vision 2030.
The commemorations come at a time when Beitbridge has become a hub for national education events.
The border town recently hosted the Provincial Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival (PASSAF) at the same venue, where over 1 019 pupils participated.
That festival served as a precursor to the National Annual Science, Sport and Arts Festival (NASSAF), which Beitbridge began on Monday and will end on Friday.
It is the first time Matabeleland South Province is hosting Zimbabwe’s premier school co-curricular festival, which rotates among the country’s 10 provinces on a 10-year cycle.
Matabeleland South Chief Education Director, Beatrice Manjere, said recently that the back-to-back hosting of national events was a major boost for the district.
NASSAF is the highest level of competition under the Heritage-Based Curriculum, featuring science and technology exhibitions, sports, arts and technical skills.
Speaking at the recent PASSAF, Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Albert Nguluvhe, said such platforms are critical for talent identification.
“Modern education is no longer confined to textbooks and examinations. It must inspire learners to think critically, solve real-life problems and innovate,” he said.
Chief Tshitaudze of Beitbridge said PASSAF was a good vehicle to unearth raw talent from rural and urban schools.
