THE Zanu PF Politburo meeting held on Wednesday unanimously endorsed President Mnangagwa to remain party President and First Secretary beyond 2028, a move meant to bring unity, continuity and stability within the party, Zanu PF secretary for Information and Publicity Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa has said.
Speaking at a post-Politburo Press conference in Harare this afternoon, Amb Mutsvangwa said all Politburo members agreed that President Mnangagwa remain the party’s President and First Secretary beyond 2028 to ensure stability within the country.
This follows the passage of CAA3, which has been signed into law
The development also comes after some provincial structures resolved that the Zanu PF constitution be reviewed and aligned, where necessary, with the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as amended, including provisions relating to the tenure and electoral cycles of party structures.
The proposed alignment is intended to promote constitutional harmony, institutional consistency, stability and continuity.
“The previous two Politburo meetings were subsequent to the passage of the CAB 3 Bill, which is now an Act, CAA3. It is of note that the genie is out of the bottle,” he said.
“When I say the genie is out of the bottle, I mean the story of Zimbabwe’s success is now on the global stage.
“People were anxious about whether we would handle this issue of a smooth handover within Zanu PF of the political systems. There was anxiety, you know, as 2028 was approaching, that would Zimbabweans hold their act together so that the country remains focused and steadfast?”
He highlighted that the passage of the Constitutional Amendment No 3 Bill addressed the issue in a definitive manner.
“We are now very confident as a country about the certainty of leadership,” Ambassador Mutsvangwa said.
“We are also confident of the stability of the political system, and we are very assured of the sustenance of the economic miracle which our President and his Second Republic has delivered.”
He stated that the issue of succession politics showed the world that Zimbabwe can handle its affairs in a smooth manner.
“This was very, very important for a signal to the world that Zimbabwe can handle its affairs in such a manner that there is smoothness in any political systems which are sure of continuity and certainty.
“CAB 3, which became an Act, addressed that issue definitively. So we are very happy with that” he stated.
Ambassador Mutsvangwa explained how the events unfolded, saying the party gauged the mood of the electorate of Zimbabwe very well.
“It carried out its consultations quite exhaustively towards this bill. Parliament debated it extensively and widely and intensely,” he said.
“When it came to votes, the passage was overwhelming in both houses. And the President had an obligation which he truly desired to sign, the Constitutional Amendment Act.
“And that was done, and there was jubilation in the party and even the opposition when this was done.”
The development was an assurance of certainty for the population as well.
“So the handling of this whole matter has addressed the thing which was like the sword of Damocles hanging over Zimbabwe,” he said.
“We will stand on behalf of Endless Affairs in such a way that there will be no actions which upset the epoch of economic recovery which is going on. So those who love Zimbabwe, they are happy with the outcome.”
He scoffed at the country’s detractors, saying they have nothing to shout about.
“For those detractors who always believed Zimbabwe would somehow be thrown off balance, I say this marks the end of their influence in Zimbabwean politics,” he said.
“And with that shift comes the beginning of Zimbabwe’s sustained economic resurgence on a long-term scale.”
